Why Gandhi Will Rock Forever
| MARKETER Why Gandhi will ROCK eternally? âItâs good to be essential. But itâs more necessary to be nice.â Picture a world the place everyone was nice to each other. No âYoursââ¦.No âMineââ¦Only âOursâ. The thought itself is pleasantly empowering. Universal Love just isn't a Utopian concept. Atleast not within the dictionary of Gandhiâ¦â¦â¦and right hereâs my tribute to this wonderful man who walked on this planet and this nice nation and showed the world how universal love & brotherhood can take an entire nation out of the darkish shackles of centuriesâ old slavery. I discovered my true hero in Gandhi once I watched the extraordinarily lovable grand-fatherly like characterization of Gandhi within the latest Hindi flick â Lagey Raho MunnaBhaiâ. There is an endearing quality about an individual who believes within the power of goodness. Goodness does triumphâ¦.Itâs no fairy-tale. And this belief calls for a lot of conviction and internal self-consc iousness. To stand rock-soild for the reality and rise up and take onus in your failings is actual heroism. Some of the social messages being handled within the story-line have been simply put, Outstanding. Very subtely told beneath the garb of clever & inspiring comedy, I totally loved the scene where a young woman takes heed of Gandhiâs advice in relation to the choice of her life-partner. Itâs necessary to marry a person who treats the lowly with the identical quantity of respect he/she would give to a Mr.Azeem Premji or a Mr.Bill Gates.Again here, the identical theme of being good is emphasised. Gandhi couldnât have presecribed a greater sure-shot method of finding oneâs Mr/Miss.Perfect. Thatâs why he's still ROCKINâ¦. Another scene which I completely identified with was the results of being a Manglik and its non-justification for being treated as a direct out-cast. It brought forth in focus the outrageous diploma of supersitions this country was dabbled in. Too many kaalams, muhurtums, kundlis, manglik, all kinds of chauts n vratsâ¦.In quick too many rituals to make oneâs already sophisticated life even more advanced.Itâs crazy how for some, each minute occasion in their life is dictated by muhurtams n vaasthus n kundalis n some âkalamsâ all that . I marvel why do people right here succumb themselves to such added issues in life.Phew! Hats off to the billions in our nation â" we ought to be the pure alternative for the Nobel Prize for Patience, if ever they plan to incorporate one such class. It actually surprises me once I hear many a proud father or mother discuss in regards to the success price of Indian marriages and the logic behind it â" Astrological Kundli matchesâ¦â¦of Mangliks n Non-mangliks alike. Methinks, the only purpose for the success fee within the yesteryears was the truth that girls werenât that empowered. They didnât also have a say go away alone voice in selecting their own life-associate. There was no concep t of a marriage between the equals. It was a marriage of the bread-winner and his dependent. Wonder if kundli matches and the step-motherly therapy given to Mangliks will save the rising pattern of divorce rates in India? Gandhi stands for freedom from all such futile complexities.and thatâs why he still rocks⦠Another fascinating discussion that unfolds from this whole issue is why do Indians bank on and attribute their success to an auspicious time n favorable planetary postion and so forth and strip themselves of being actually worthy and answerable for their very own success..More on this in my next postâ¦.. At this conclusionary juncture, I am reminded of Tagoreâs verses from âGitanjaliâ which I suppose ought to be a litany for all : âWhere the mind is with out worry and the pinnacle is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow home partitions Where words come out from the depth of reality Where tireless striving stretches its arms in direction of perfection Where the clear stream of purpose has not lost its means Into the dreary desert sand of useless habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and motion Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awakeâ Post navigation four comments Hi Tina, By a strange coincidence I also noticed Lage Raho Munnabhai on nineteenth October, the day u wrote your weblog. I noticed it not at a multiplex paying Rs a hundred seventy five however at an old cinema corridor (in all probability Mahatma Gandhiâs time) paying a paltry Rs 35 for the balcony seat, thanks to the tax exemption. However, the state of Gujarat, the place Gandhiji was born has not prolonged the tax exemption as it's dominated by insensitive individuals who assume that if a film is a business success it wants no exemption. Well, I beloved the character of sanjay dutt, a zombie who turns into a Gandhian under compelling circumstances and realises what it means to inform the truth and be good to individuals, understand the ache and suffering of others and help them resolve their issues in a peaceful way. Instead of reading tomes of Gandhian philosophy this short movie susccinctly sums up in three hours, the quintessential philosophy of Gandhiji. The yo unger director deserves a tribute for conceiving the story, and dealing on the script for three years sharpening it. I had heard that Thomas Grey who wrote the âElegy Written in a Country Churchyardâ took twenty years to shine it till it grew to become a gem of the purest ray serene. So additionally the Munnabhai story. I completely agree with u that society is ridden with superstition, false value techniques, crass materialism and insensitivity to struggling.Gandhiji sang an exquisite bhajan â Vaishnava Janato tene kahiye jo peeda paraye jaane reâ which implies They are the true people of God who perceive the sufferings of others. And one other poem which was his favourite was âLead kindly mild, amidst the encircling gloom, Lead thou me onâThe Nobel Peace Prize Committee recently lamented thefact that they may not award the NObel Peace Prize to Gandhiji? As if that meant something to him! Sweden was ally of UK in WWII and could unwell afford to displease Churchill who on ce known as Gandhijiâ a half naked fakir ascending the viceregal steps, shoot him.â It was Einstein who stated that centuries from now folks would scarce believe that an individual of Gandhijiâs nature ever walked on this earth. A thousand Nobel prizes can not match the assertion of the daddy of Relativity concept. It is claimed when Bernard Shaw heard of Gandhijiâs assasination he remarkedâ It is too harmful to be too goodâ But Gandhiji died with a smile on his lips after uttering âHey Ram HeyRamâ He did not curse his assassin. Reminiscent of one other nice apostle of peace who lived two thousand years ago who mentioned â Father forgive them for they know not what they doâ How many leaders of Gandhijiâs timbre exist at present? U can rely them in your fingers. May be a Sunderlal Bahuguna who hugs bushes when the demolition squad come with their axes, a Medha Pathak who can starve herself to close dying for the sake of the miserablae tribals deprived of their l and to hold water to the rich someplace faraway, a Baba Amte, although paralysed for over thirty years, runs a lepers home from his mattress, a veritable Father Damien of India. Yes, so long as we break coconuts and perform puja at each Government function or inauguration, and apply tilaks and put on sacred wrist bands to show off your religiousity, there is no deliverance for our nation. But then what in regards to the west? Dont they break champaigne bottles while launching a ship or a project? Dont they consider in the signs of the zodiac and skim the weekly forecast columns, or present their palm to palmists and astrlogers. Ignorance and superstition is a common phenomenon. Only in India, it is in an epidemic form. There are a fwew NGOs like Andh Shraddha Nirmoolan Samiti in Pune, run by dedicated rationalists that are fighting the evils of superstition, such as barring entry to ladies within the Shani temples in Maharashtra, feeding milk to snakes on Nagpanchami etc. But they fa ce robust opposition. What about the cntroversy in regards to the Ayyappa temple? Is it not suprstition of the worst type? When faith is packaged and marketed with the assistance of superstition it turns into blind religion, however it is lapped up by the plenty. Are Mangliks doomed to remain unmarried for all times? No they have to look for different Mangliks of their ilk whose horoscopes be sure that the girl or boy is not going to convey demise to the in legal guidelines. Superstition forsooth! And what about the miracle Godmen who take swisswatches from their sleeves and when challenged by PCSorkar, beat him and drive him out of their ashram? Much needs to be done in this nation. But initially is to coach the lots. On the one hand we're highly intellectual within the 1 or 2 % of our educated population and greater than half the folks cant sign their names. angootta chaaps. And we spend thousands of crores on polio eradication, which is proving to be a failure and neglect ailments like malaria and tb which take millions of lives, and we concentrate as an alternative on HIV aids maybe because of the foreign help dangled earlier than the NGOs and the Government. We can go on and on? But what is the resolution? We write these blogs which only some folks learn and even they may not be fascinated in the topic. HOw can u spread the message to a broader part of the individuals. A movement known as for the place we've to be prepared to go out depart our cocooned existence and work among the many poor and sensitise them to social evils and make them aware of their rights. Not for glamour, but out of all humility and for the love of it. Can u discover such dedicated individuals and in that case who will unite them and organise a movement? Well, i think i've rattled off more than what i got down to in reply to your easy and candy piece on Munnabhai. Sorry for the digressions. Please proceed your blogs. I will learn the remainder of your blogs too and may comment on them. U write in such easy language and so nicely! And how is little Pammoo? I am positive he would grow up in much better world than we did. Adieu Like Like This remark has been eliminated by a weblog administrator. With Big Data Comes Big Responsibility Protect Data on Your HRIS #BigDataHR - Workology
With Big Data Comes Big Responsibility Protect Data on Your HRIS #BigDataHR - Workology How is Employee Big Data Collected and Stored? Employers amass big data on their employees. Under state and federal laws, the employer has an absolute and non-delegable duty to prevent disclosure and misuse of that data, to notify employees of any potential security breach, and to use the data only for the purpose for which it was ostensibly collected. With employee big data, comes employer big responsibility. How is Employee Big Data Collected and Stored? While some companies may still drag paper personnel files from desk to desk, the vast majority have electrified their record-keeping through a human resources information system. In a nutshell, HRIS is a specialty software application or platform that allows HR professionals to use electronically stored employee information to populate forms and automate common HR tasks. More than a simple database, HRIS is designed to house disparate and seemingly unrelated pieces of information for use in combinations to make legally compliant as well as business savvy decisions. For instance, HRIS automates the companyâs employee benefits and enrollment programs, vacation, sick leave, PTO and other forms of leave taking, mandatory state and federal filings (like the EEO1 reports, OSHA or workersâ compensation forms), applicant tracking, and employee training, evaluation and even discipline and termination information. A competent HRIS program allows the HR pro to look up the date of hire, number of vacation days accrued, whether Joe has signed his arbitration agreement, or has any leave left under FMLA â" all through a handful of key strokes. What Employee Big Data Is Found in an HRIS? Personal: Name, age and date of birth, home and email addresses, social security number, telephone number, passport numbers, photograph, I-9 status, next of kin information, literacy, language skills, religion, marriage and domestic partner information and status (which could reveal sexual orientation, divorce, children born outside of marriage, etc.), religious beliefs and observances, employeeâs and family memberâs military service history (under USERRA, FMLA and CFRA). Financial: Banks and Lenders (through job verifications), bank account numbers, balance and deposit dates, money and debt (through direct deposit programs), bankruptcy, property owned and liens against property (through background screening), garnishment. Medical: Insurance and renewal dates, life insurance totals and beneficiaries, medical conditions, disabilities, treatment, prescriptions, leave status, surgical history, drug and alcohol history and rehabilitation efforts, names of doctors and health care providers, smoking, drinking, weight and nutritional habits (through health and wellness programs and incentives), medical conditions and disabilities of immediate family members, .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Credit, Criminal and Cars: Employee credit and criminal history (which could include a mug shot!), character references and statements (from background screenings), DMV records, including points and DUI information, insurability, prior accidents, driverâs license number, insurance policy number and renewal dates (on those who drive for the company), type of hands-free phone and user history (for distracted driving prevention policies). (And letâs not even get started on a document management system (DMS) that also stores, categorizes and files email correspondence! No matter how strong your electronic communications policy is, most employees use their work email addresses for all manner of personal communications and while emails are not necessarily folded into HRIS, laws protecting employee data apply to that contained in emails stored in an employers DMS.) What Laws Protect Employee Big Data? Privacy Laws The information identified above is private. Some is embarrassing and some could cause mischief and real damage if disclosed. In some states, private information is protected by a constitutional provision. For instance, Article I, Section 1 of the California Constitution states: âAll people are by nature free and independent and have inalienable rights. Among these are enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing, and protecting property, and pursuing and obtaining safety, happiness, and privacy.â Cal. Const. Art. I, Sect. 1. This has been defined by case law to protect an employeeâs educational, personnel, health and medical, and financial records. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Federal and state law protects specific information from disclosure or use, such as: HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Act) (Federal) medical records and other personal health information. (Summary of Privacy Rule) MIC (Medical Information Confidentiality) (State â" CA) medical information from marketing use and disclosure. Cal. Civ. Code § § 56-56.37 GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) (Federal) genetic test results. 29 USC 201 § et seq. Alcohol and Drug Testing: Testing results and leave for rehabilitation. Various, including HIPAA and MIC, along with Family and Medical Leave and California Family Rights Acts (FMLA and CFRA). Disclosure and Abuse Prevention Employee data is valuable. Identity Theft: When information is grouped, it can personally identify the subject. For instance, personally identifying information consisting of the personâs name together with their DOB and SSN, is the key to obtaining a false identity â" commonly referred to as âidentity theftâ which, in turn, allows the thief to set up bank accounts, borrow money, open credit cards, transfer real property, lease cars or property, change your social media and other electronic passwords and user names, and commit all manner of malicious and damaging mischief against the employee and his or her employer. Mailing Lists, Advertisers and Other Commercial Users: Letâs say you have a dispatch and distribution center in a mid-sized Midwestern US city with a local work force of 1,000. A mailing list of 1,000 consumers, sortable by demographics, income, health and debt, is worth thousands of dollars. A spreadsheet with your employee information, easily generated by most HRIS, could be worth thousands of dollars both nationally and locally, and it could be sold over and over and over. As an employer, however, you have the duty to protect this information from disclosure and misuse under the following laws: FACTA (Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act). (Federal) Employers that collect personal information or consumer reports about customers or employees for a business purpose must safeguard such information and to use reasonable measures to destroy the information before it is discarded FACTA is enforced by the FTC. 15 USC § 1681, et. seq. CFAA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act). (Federal) The CFAA allows suit against someone who furthers a fraud or obtains anything of value by accessing a computer without authorization or by exceeding authorized access. While not always successful in court, the CFAA has been used to sue an employee who misappropriates information from a company-owned computer. 18 USC § 1030. CMA (Computer Misuse and Abuse Act) (State â" CA) It is a crime to knowingly access and, without permission, use, misuse, abuse, damage, contaminate, disrupt or destroy a computer, computer system, computer network, computer service, computer data or computer program. Depending on the violation, CMA can support fines and imprisonment, as well as remedies recoverable in civil actions. Cal. Penal Code § 502. Steps on Disclosure Both FACTA (above) and Californiaâs DPA (Data Protection Act) prescribe mandatory action by the employer should they discover that personally identifying information has been disclosed. In California, owners of computerized data must tell impacted residents that their unencrypted personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by an unauthorized person. Notice must be followed by the provision of certain remedial action also mandated by the statute. Cal. Civ. Code § § 1798.80, et seq. If you have an HRIS or otherwise store personal employee information on your companyâs computer network (and who doesnât?), you should create a policy for use and disclosure of the data and a plan for the emergency situation that arises when it is inadvertently disclosed or intentionally hacked. HR professionals should consult with their companyâs in-house counsel or outside employment counsel to determine which of these laws apply the data stored on the companyâ s computers. Caveat: With my apologies please note this ubiquitous disclaimer. Although I am an employment lawyer, this article is for informational purposes only and cannot be construed as legal advice. You should always seek counsel before acting upon legal information found on the Internet. Nothing takes the place of a lawyer who knows your business and the laws of the state in which it operates.

Finding an up-and-comer with AutoCAD experience is simple. Finding an applicant with Revit capability, a MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) foundation, and in any event 5 to 7 years of expert experience, in any case, can be so intense we consider these competitors our needles in the bundle. Ask for a recently recruited employee with Revit capability and you may have better karma purchasing a triumphant lottery ticket. Numerous task patrons can get to halfway shared models, smoothing out coordination and diminishing the requirement for modify. Given Revit's notoriety, you might be astounded to discover that plan and building programs didn't generally show this product. In the four years following the 2008 downturn, structure and building programs likewise had less alumni in light of the fact that there were less openings for work. While new alumni are presently getting Revit preparing, most alumni with 5 to 7 years of experience didn't. Employment Survey Results-2013
Employment Survey Results-2013 milewalks 2013 Employment Survey Results At milewalk, we are fully committed to bringing valuable insight to the workforce. Irrespective of your vocation, we believe all companies and individuals can support the growth of our economy. We can help achieve this by elevating awareness of key employment survey results information that will help companies manage their employees more effectively as well as enable individuals to make smart career choices. Following is the report from our third annual employment survey. The survey was initiated to help provide awareness of key factors that affect our work lives. We thank all participants who provided this information. We also welcome any questions and additional thoughts. We distributed this survey to over 5,000 individuals with 702 responding. The respondent base included individuals who hold positions within management and information technology consulting firms, software companies, and other prominent organizations. It was evident from the results that most, but not all, of the sentimental improvements from 2011 to 2012 have held for 2013. Even so, that didnât prevent 60% of the respondents from interviewing for another job in 2012. When polled in 2012, we noted that the employee base had been quite mobile in recent years. This most recent survey shows that more than half (54%) have been with their current employer for three years or less. A noteworthy trend that is holding, however, is that their âhappiness quotientâ in how they feel about their companies and jobs is relatively steady. In addition, the number of employees that were happy and very happy with their company (61%) and role (64%) were triple the number of unhappy and very unhappy (20% in both cases). One critical issue that was addressed between 2011 and 2012 that has been completed reversed this year is how dissatisfied employees were with their current level of compensation. Almost 1 out of 2 employees feel they are underpaid. Specifically, the 13% optimizing that occurred from 2011 to 2012 was exactly reversed. Another positive shift from 2011-2012 that was met with a reversal for 2012-2013 was the employeeâs attitude toward job changing. This yearâs data shows an 11% increase from the previous year in those willing to change jobs. It also shows that the employeesâ actions are consistent with their sentiment by an increase of 12.4% in those that have actually interviewed with a company other than their own in the last 12 months. For every 100 employees in your company, 60 interviewed somewhere else in 2012. As we reviewed the employeeâs attitude toward critical areas of their current positions and companies, career development opportunity once again nudged the management team as the most disappointing. Even so, when we evaluated which criteria would lead the charge as they turned to new opportunities, (once again) compensation, culture, and role (in that order) reigned as the top three. The most noteworthy change from last year is that the already number one criteria moving forwardcompensationeased a bit. One additional perplexing item related to looking to the future is that employeeâs seem to place little value on one of the most critical reasons why they leave their current jobtheir boss. milewalk captures historical insight related to why our candidates are open to changing jobs. 80% cite their boss as one of the top three reasons. Even so, this criterion falls to the bottom when evaluating their next employment option. As the employees turn to evaluate the market, they will lean heavily on their personal networks (97.3% indicating so). That is a great sign for organizations that rely heavily on employee referrals to grow. Much like last year, 81.2% will also turn to executive recruiters. The most notable change is that while 70.5% will use the social sites, we consider the 8% decrease from 2012 a questionable decision considering the fact that employers leverage sites such as Linked In so heavily. As we turned to the hiring officials and reviewed their assessment of upcoming needs, important criteria for the candidates, proficiency level of their recruiting functions, as well as additional avenues they deploy to fulfill their employment needs, we confirmed the continued upward trend for hiring. Over 86% of hiring authorities indicated they will be hiring this year. The biggest change from last year is that 53% of those indicated they will add more four or more resources, up from 41.4% for 2012. With the hiring needs in place, these officials cited âtime to fillâ as the greatest disappointment. Candidly, we believe that âtime to fillâ is not the actual issue, but a symptom of a lack of quality candidates (the second most disappointing criteria). Employers simply move more quickly when they have a quality candidate in their recruiting pipeline. Over the last nine years, our historical milewalk statistics indicate a 38.2% greater level of efficiency in these cases. Interestingly, while 83.7% of the companies are leveraging internal recruiting resources, a significant portion also rely on executive recruiters (46.5%) and independent contractors (27.9%) to supplement those internal functions. The very startling change from 2012 is that there was almost a 10 point drop in firms using their own internal recruiting and a more than 10 point increase in those deploying executive search firms. As companies interview potential employees, they will favor cultural fit and capabilities and over track record of achievement and specific skill sets. While this has historically been the case, specific skills had become a greater focus in the last few years because the hiring needs have waned. What we are noting in practice is that this shift is becoming greater and organizations are now trying to recruit âbest athletesâ even if they donât have the specific skill sets. It is our opinion that this precipitates from the difficulty employers are encountering in their recruiting efforts. View the full results here.

Addressing Work Gaps During the Interview
Tending to Work Gaps During the Interview 37 Flares 37 Flares Tom Gimbel is the President and CEO of LaSalle Network, a Chicago-based staffing firm. Established in 1998, LaSalle has served a large number of customers and applicants, setting work searchers in transitory, brief to-changeless and stable situations. LaSalle is the main Illinois-put together setting up firm named with respect to the Inc. 500/5000 rundown for the last seven back to back years. ReadTom's most recent on his blog, Past Five, or tweet him @TomGimbel. During a meeting, up-and-comers have a constrained measure of time to persuade a recruiting director that they are the best individual for the role. That being stated, it's normal (and reasonable) that an applicant centers the discussion just around the amazing purposes of their resume and doesn't address any territories of worry that an employing administrator could possibly raise. This is the greatest avoidable error they can make. Gaps on a resume are viewed as warnings. Period. It's the applicant's business to address them and be forthright and legit. Here are a couple of things to be real to life about in a meeting: Holes in work history: Taking downtime to manage an individual issue is worthy. Going on vacation to divert your profession way and reinvest in learning another industry is exemplary. Offer the explanations behind holes in work history. Not all, however many recruiting supervisor's will acknowledge genuineness and dismissal the slip by of time spent jobless⦠as long as it wasn't spent sitting in front of the TV. Employment jumping: Hiring directors would prefer not to hear that a competitor remained at work for just three months, or that they have held three, four, five situations in 1-2 years⦠it shows absence of duty. For what reason would an organization put resources into somebody who is a flight chance? Toward the day's end, up-and-comers should be set up for these protests and prepared to address the inquiry: What did you do to attempt to make it work? Explanations behind stopping. Recruiting administrators have heard everything â" Not tested, extended periods of time, no space for development, culture fit⦠and obviously, not coexisting with a past manager⦠indeed, it's alright to make reference to this as well, yet use judgment. Castigating a past manager is never a smart thought, yet carefully expressing there was an irreconcilable situation and maturely clarifying it is alright. Keep in mind, a definitive objective during the quest for new employment is to locate the correct organization for you, openly sharing why past managers weren't right won't assist you with discovering this. Laid off. In the event that you were laid off in light of staff cuts, be forthright about it. Tenured experts who worked through the downturn were influenced by cutbacks somehow, regardless of whether they were laid off themselves or knew somebody who was. Cutbacks occur⦠what makes a difference is the means by which an up-and-comer reacts. Terminated. The truth is, individuals are humiliated to state they were terminated. Nobody needs to concede they flopped in a job, however it has happened to many individuals through their vocations. Have motivations to clarify what turned out badly, what was a gained from each understanding, and how you've developed as an expert as a result of it.

?? 35 Smart Things to Actually Do and Not Do at Job Fairs
?? 35 Smart Things to Actually Do and Not Do at Job Fairs 284 Can you get hired at a job fair? You can if you follow these tips. Photo by Filip Bunkens I've been to many career fairs, both as a job seeker and as a speaker and advisor. When looking for a job, I would typically come to the fair early in the event, dressed well and holding a binder or folder with resume copies. Once inside, I'd scan the room (or fair map) to decide which companies to visit. Then I'd head first to whichever company stand had the shortest line of waiting job seekers. I came more or less prepared, yes, but too often I arrived with the wrong mindset: I basically treated the fair as a simple item to check off on my job search to-do list. Instead of aiming to really push my job search forward, I would ultimately just go through the motions of handing out all the resumes I brought with me, trying to get it all over with and get out of there as soon as possible, without truly taking advantage of what was going on around me.eval Sound familiar? The main reason why job fairs are good for jumpstarting your job search is for meeting company reps, but they can do so much more IF you know how to take advantage of everything they have to offer.eval Here's a list of 35 job fair do's and don'ts for success at your next fair. Are job fairs a waste of time? Yes No View Results Free bonus: Download JobMob's Job Fair Success Guide with over 60 job fair tips. Before the job fair Do fill in an online application form in advance if the career fair organizers requested that you do so. Do dress professionally. For guys, that means ironed shirt and pants, possibly even a jacket and tie. For girls, that's a pressed skirt or pantsuit with sleeves and necklines that are conservative. Don't wear jeans or flashy jewelry. Do have many copies of your resume with you to distribute. Needless to say but I'll say it anyway, make sure the resume is up-to-date. Bring a work portfolio too in case of snap interviews. Don't give out rumpled copies or anything less than crisp CVs, which is why I usually brought a folder or binder. Do come with note-taking gear â" a smartphone, or a day planner and pen. If a recruiter offers you a meeting or interview, immediately update your agenda with the date and time in front of that person, which builds your credibility and makes you look professional. Don't try to commit that information to memory and risk forgetting it, which would be very unprofessional. Do have a small backpack or briefcase to hold any business cards, flyers or swag that companies give you. Don't carry about a plastic bag from a local supermarket with your resumes inside. You'd be surprised. Do prepare in advance and have clear goals for the job fair. If you know which companies will be at the fair, research them by visiting their websites and seeing if they have any open positions that interest you. If so, learn about the business and be ready to answer questions when you meet their representatives. Don't make unrealistic goals. Walking out of the fair with a job contract in hand would be one of them. Even interview invites are often unlikely, but it is realistic to get hiring manager contact information that you can act on later. Do make a sales pitch for yourself, also called an elevator pitch: a 30-second infomercial about you. Practice saying it to other people. When you're comfortable enough, you'll get the hang of tweaking it on the fly as you discuss yourself with other career fair attendees. Don't wait until the last minute to do follow these pre-job fair tips but even that is better than not preparing at all. During the job fair Do arrive early to take some time to develop a plan of action for your time at the fair. Don't bring up the fact that you arrived late if it happens. Do talk to as many people as possible within reason â" bearing in mind that quality is more important than quantity â" since networking is an important element of any job fair. Don't interrupt other people when they're talking at company booths. Do look directly at recruiters and listen to them. Don't answer your cellphone when talking to any company representatives. Do smile, be friendly and try to relax. Bring a friend if it will help break the ice and make it easier for you to approach the company tables. Don't come to the fair and expect that people will approach you or call out at you like in the shuk (Israeli marketplace, or bazaar). Do take note of whom you submitted resumes to, for following up later. Don't give out your resumes to uninterested companies just for the sake of doing so. You may run out of resumes sooner than you think. Do request business cards. Write down who you met and where on the back of each business card you receive, and in front of the giver. If they have none, ask for their contact information and note it. Don't just stuff the business card in your pocket as if you're doing the giver a favor by taking it from her. Do visit companies that you are unfamiliar with e.g. because you didn't know they'd be at the fair. If their representative asks, give them that reason and say that you normally would have researched them otherwise. Don't pretend that you know their business. They'll notice sooner than you realize. Do ask when is best to contact the company after the fair and write it down. Don't ask and then forget or otherwise miss that contact deadline. Do stop and reflect midway through the fair. Have you accomplished any of your goals? If not, what do you need to change before the fair ends? Otherwise, what's left to be done? After the job fair Do follow up any job opportunities that you discovered at the fair. Email is good, telephone is better. Don't call during lunch hour or any other inconvenient moment. Do send thank you letters with copies of your CV, especially if you ran out of CVs during the fair. Don't pester these new contacts or be too insisting and appear desperate. Be courteous of the recruiter's time. Do take a look back at your performance. Did you reach all of your goals? What did you do well? Where could you improve for next time? Don't browbeat yourself. Everyone has bad days. What's important is to learn from your mistakes. Behind every success story is a list of failures. It can be easy to have a successful job fair if you take the time to prepare for it and act professionally throughout. You'll leave a good impression and might even find your dream job.
