Market Meltdown Change Your Job-Search Mindset

Market Meltdown Change Your Job-Search MindsetMarket Meltdown Change Your Job-Search MindsetMarket Meltdown Change Your Job-Search MindsetThe current economic meltdown is just the tip of a much larger iceberg that will have far reaching economic implications for all of us here in the U.S. Tens of thousands of layoffs in and beyond the financial industry will only be the start of mora sober times as companies across the country will be forced to rethink their future hiring plans. One fact seems certain. All of these combined circumstances will have huge ramifications for job seekers. The failing economy and a constantly rising unemployment rate will require individuals to take a fresh approach to their job search.Referencing the most recent economic crisis, Neil McNulty, Principal Recruiter, McNulty Management Group states, The game has changed, but the rules remain the same now, more than ever, job seekers need to change their mindset from looking for openings to looking for opportuni ties. Opportunities are born out of crisis and chaos, and exist evenin the worst economy. This means that you, as a job seeker, must look beyond job postings and move into marketing yourself to the managers of the companies and organizations who are experiencing problems that you can solve. Heres how1. Change Your MindsetMove away from being a passive job seeker and toward being an active problem-solver. Dont just rely on the Internet to find job openings. Scour the marketplace to find the hidden jobs that arent advertised. Most jobs are not posted or advertised. The best jobs are often found through networking, word-of-mouth and informational interviews.2. Stop Thinking of Yourself as Just an Assortment of Job SkillsSee yourself as a product to package and market, and then create your own marketing campaign to find your desired job. This includes having a state-of-the-art resume and sharpening your interviewing skills.3. Sell ROIView yourself in terms of Return on Investment for an employer. See yourself as a mini-profit and loss center. Be prepared to demonstrate ways you have helped to positively impact the bottom line of your past or current employer. This means demonstrating ways youve helped make money or save money for an employer or clients. As employees, we all touch money. Some of us may be closer to it than others. Regardless, we must find ways to prove this in short sound bites when given the opportunity.Remember, its not about you, but about the organization itself. All communication with a prospective employer must answer the question, Whats in it for me (the employer)? The road ahead will be littered with casualties make no mistake about that. We could sit by and whine about the circumstances. We could wait for the government to initiate a bailout package that might somehow rescue the unemployed. Or, we could take charge of our own lives and power ourselves forward. Joseph P. Kennedy said many years ago, When the going gets tough, the tough get go ing. That statement is just as true today as it was then. Whether were employed or not, we all have this rocky, tough economy in common. We can respond as victims of the economy or we can get tough, and get going.

How to Tell Your Boss When You Have Burnout - The Muse

How to Tell Your Boss When You Have Burnout - The Muse How to Tell Your Boss When You Have Burnout One day you’re crushing it. Delivering projects, sharing big ideas in meetings, making things happen. Next thing you know, you’re crushed. You feel lost, confused, and unable to find your way out. You’ve completely lost your focus, and you’re just so exhausted. Burnout generally happens after a prolonged spell of working as hard as you possibly can- either without being invested or engaged in the work (i.e., you’re just calling it in) or because you intend to deliver above and beyond expectations. Both of these situations are problematic. Feeling like you’re personally contributing, connecting with others, leveraging your creativity- or whatever your role means to you- is an anchor for the work you do. It’s why you do what you do. Without personal meaning, you’ll start to wear down from relentlessly throwing yourself into the churn and pulse of things. You can’t sustain this kind of disconnected, meaningless work for very long. If you’ve made it your mission to work as hard as you can to exceed the expectations of your role and your organization, you’re bound to fall into the habit of doing your work to please everyone around you and tick off all of their boxes. Always focusing on proving yourself and delivering in line with expectations will leave you struggling to keep up. It’s exhausting. There are different strategies to deal with and move through burnout, but the healing process (because this does require healing) often starts with one thing- telling your boss. Yes, I know that’s a scary prospect, but here are some ways to get yourself ready for the conversation and prepare you to take positive steps forward to get past this tumultuous time. 1. Find a Confidante Before talking with your boss, a great first step is to confide in a friend or speak with your partner or a family member about where you are and what you’re feeling. The act of verbalizing what’s happening, while difficult, is essential in starting to get the support you need. Without the care of people close to you, you’ll feel alone or anxious about dealing with it on your own. Just as I’m sure you’d want to help a friend or loved one, know that they want to be there for you too. Be brave, swallow any pride that’s holding you back, and open up about your breakdown. 2. Expect Discomfort Going into the meeting with your manager expecting it to be comfortable is unrealistic. You’re in an unfamiliar, unwanted place, but rather than taking your discomfort and using it as a reason not to discuss your struggles, you should look at it as the exact reason why you do have to discuss it. You can set things up by framing it as a necessary conversation- ”I hope you know I wouldn’t be bringing this to your attention unless it was necessary.” Moreover, mentioning how hard the conversation is can be a useful way to call out the elephant in the room- ”This is really hard for me, but...” or “It feels really hard to even bring this up, but...”. 3. Don’t Problem Solve You may be used to going to your boss with updates that prove your problem-solving skills, but this isn’t that kind of issue. You don’t have to have the fix. You don’t have to find a way to cover your workload if you’re going to be out of the office, and you don’t even need to try and explain how you got to this point. Resist the temptation to offer a solution because you think it’ll make you look good to your manager. The only important thing right now is that you start the healing process. That begins when you allow yourself to be vulnerable when you approach your boss without all the answers. 4. Put Yourself First If you’re a high-achiever with inflexible personal standards, it’ll be hard for you to put your work responsibilities to one side and prioritize your mental health and well-being. But that’s what you need to do to start moving through this. Go into the conversation knowing that, while your team will want to do what they can to support you, your boss will likely need to prioritize the work to keep everything moving along. That means you can expect some difficult conversations where you’re pulled between doing the right thing for you and the right thing for the work. So let me be clear once again- your primary responsibility is to know what you need to start healing, then make the decision to follow through. Listening to your body and hearing that voice inside that knows what you need means not sticking to your regular working hours out of a sense of duty if your boss seems reluctant to let you take a break from all work to recover. If time off isn’t offered, be direct and ask for what you need- a regular work-from-home-day, two days off, maybe even an entire week out of the office. It may be tempting to offer up compromises until you’re ready to be back in the office full swing, but that’s only putting yourself at risk and delaying the healing. So if you truly need a full two days off with no email- make sure you’re making that clear. In other words, trust yourself to make decisions that serve you well. And know this: If you’ve been a hard worker and a diligent, productive employee and your company cares about your growth and success, it will find a way to understand- no matter how busy things are. Burnout can create a bubbling stew of emotion- feelings of not being good enough, like you should have been able to avoid it happening, that you’ll lose all the hard work you’ve put in or that people will judge you- and it’s sometimes hard to know which way is up. Your emotions can become unpredictable or erupt suddenly, especially when you start talking about where you are. But these emotions are a real part of what you’re going through; they aren’t your enemy. You might find tears welling up or your breath sticking in your chest as you try to find the right words. That’s OK. Emotion might not be a “normal” part of the workplace, but in this case, it’s to be expected. You don’t need to stifle them or push them away in the interests of “being professional”. So take all the time that you need to breathe and steady yourself. If it helps to diffuse the drama, even call it out by saying “This is an emotional thing for me” or “The emotion catches up with me sometimes.” It’s not your fault this happened and it can be a great learning experience, (believe me, I know), but you won’t learn any lessons overnight. For now, all you have to do is take the best care of yourself that you can, and trust that this isn’t how it’s going to be forever.

Leadership blind spot Your least valued language of appreciation

Leadership blind spot Your least valued language of appreciation Leadership blind spot Your least valued language of appreciation By nature, we all tend to speak our own language of appreciation. If  Acts of Service  make me feel appreciated, then I will tend to pitch in and help my colleagues. If  Quality Time  makes me feel appreciated, then I may often go out of my way to stop by a teammate’s office and “check in” to see how they are doing. If  Words of Affirmation  make me feel appreciated, then you can expect that I will give use verbal praise to those with whom I work. If a high five energizes me and makes me feel appreciated, I will likely express my appreciation to others with  Physical Touch.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  But if I only do what comes naturally, the language of appreciation that is least valued by me will seldom be spoken. If receiving gifts means little to me in terms of feeling appreciated, then I am likely to ignore this language of appreciation. It becomes a blind spot. I assume that since gifts have little value to me, they will be of little value to others. Thus, the coworkers for whom  Tangible Gifts  is their primary language of appreciation will feel unappreciated even though in my mind, I am freely expressing appreciation in one of the other languages. The black hole  In astronomy, a black hole is an entity that sucks in virtually everything surrounding it- light, matter, and energy. Whatever goes in never comes out. A black hole takes and takes, without giving back.A person’s least valued language of appreciation can approximate a black hole in the work setting. When a colleague’s least important language of appreciation is  Words of Affirmation, no matter how much praise you give them, it misses the mark. They will not feel encouraged or appreciated from compliments, notes of appreciation, or recognition in front of team members. Verbal affirmation is not important to them. You are essentially wasting your energy. The same can be t rue of any of the languages- spending quality time with team members, doing tasks to help them out, or giving them a gift card to a nice restaurant. This fact that can save you a lot of time and emotional energy:  a person’s lowest language of appreciation  really  is not important to them. This does not mean that the other person is weird. They are simply different- different from you.If you don’t fully grasp and implement this reality in how you relate to your colleagues, you will waste a lot of time and energy trying to encourage them in ways that have little or no impact on them. Then you may start to feel that they are ungrateful and don’t appreciate all that you are trying to do for them. You may conclude that there is nothing that will satisfy them or make them feel like you appreciate their work. This, of course, is not true.Overcoming the challenge of your blind spotThe first step in getting past your blind spot as a manager or colleague is to become aware of it. (If y ou haven’t yet, taken  the MBA Inventory  and discover your least favorite language of appreciation.Understanding your least valued language can be difficult. For me, Tangible Gifts is my least valued language of appreciation. Sure, I will appreciate receiving an iTunes gift card, but it is really not a big deal to me. So it is harder for me to really understand how a colleague could get excited getting a gift. I often find myself thinking thoughts like, “They certainly get excited about something that is no big deal,” or “I just don’t get it. I would much rather get some praise than a free day at the health club.”As a result, I have taken the initiative to talk to some of my colleagues whose primary language of appreciation is receiving tangible gifts. I asked one of my team members, “What about getting tickets to the ballgame is important to you? Why does that mean so much to you?” His response helped me to see the situation from his point of view.“Because,” Jo e replied, “first, it shows me that my team leader has taken time and interest to find out something about me personally and what I like. I played baseball in college and still love going to games. Second, he took the initiative and effort to go and get the tickets for me. It shows me that doing what it takes to encourage or reward me is worth it to him.”Once you have identified your least valued language of appreciation, I would encourage you to talk with colleagues for whom this is their primary language of appreciation. Ask them what those actions communicate to them and how they are encouraged by them. Try to gain a deeper sense of understanding of how they are impacted by that particular language of appreciation. It will then become easier for you to learn to speak that language with your teammates for whom it is extremely important and to “hit the mark” in affirming them that you really do value them. This article originally appeared on Appreciation at Work.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Break Through Online Job Application Systems

How to Break Through Online Job Application Systems How to Break Through Online Job Application Systems 8 Its a good idea to understand what an online job application system is. Armed with that knowledge, your next step can be forming a strategy to break through job application systems and reach a real person in your search for  flexible jobs. What is an ATS and what does it mean for your job search? In a nutshell,  application tracking systems  are a technology-based strategy for employers to manage job applications, especially when there are many job candidates. Job application systems use software that allows candidates to electronically scan resumes, and store them in a database thats easily accessible by hiring managers and recruiters. Using keywords and data mining, employers can home in on candidates who are the best fit for them. As convenient as job application systems may be for employers, they can add hurdles to the application process for job seekers whove worked hard on  customized resumes and cover letters, only to see them disappear into the ether. What employers use job application systems? Estimates of employers that  use job application systems range from 60 to as much as 90 percent. Which may not be surprising, given the huge increase in online job search platforms and job boards, as well as the growth in software companies marketing applicant tracking systems. The  top 70 applicant tracking systems  are used by thousands of companies across all industries. That said, its in your best interest to understand how to crack the code for online job application systems as much as possible, to get ahead of the competition. How to break through online job application systems: 1. Use the right keywords. Start by closely reading the job description to target phrases and  keywords in your job search  that describe what the employer is seeking. Once you have an understanding of descriptions and keywords that are repeated, youll have a grasp of what the job application system is scanning for. Using the same terminology in the job description and knowing what  keywords you should be using  will increase the chances that youll rank higher in the ATS database. 2. Get to the point. The less you fluff up you resume, and choose instead to provide concrete examples of your  career accomplishments, the better off youll be. Be specific: If the job opening is for a UX designer, use that specifically in your resume and cover letter to boost your visibility to the job application system. However, dont overdo it! Going overboard could backfire and make it appear youre trying to game the system. 3. Do your research. Language is power. Do some research to determine what qualifications the employers looking for, and use language and social media links that will be picked up by job application systems. Understanding how and  why you should research companies  can help you determine which certifications, skills, work experience, and other attributes to highlight that will be picked up by job application systems. 4. Dont leave blanks. If youre completing an employers online application, be sure to fill out every field. Leaving even one blank field could invalidate your application in job application systems, thus rendering your efforts useless. Be as accurate as you can and never  lie on a resume  or exaggerate or over-state your qualifications and achievements. 5. Skip the graphics, PDF files, and tables. Its probably at this stage of the job application game to skip graphics or tables, and to forego attaching PDF files or other extraneous data that might trip up programmed job application systems. Many ATS systems prefer the .DOC format to PDF files, and while graphics and other design-focused elements may work for humans, they may not be recognized by job application systems. Create one profile per company. Be mindful of the fact that most employers have one profile per job candidate. If youre applying for more than one job with a specific employer, verify that all of your information is under one profile, rather than scattered across several profile entries. However, its still imperative to tailor your applications and cover letters to specific positions. Study says fathers have work flexibility with baby moms health improves

Study says fathers have work flexibility with baby mom's health improves Study says fathers have work flexibility with baby mom's health improves Giving fathers work flexibility in the months right after childbirth reduces the risk of the mother having physical postpartum health complications, and improves her mental well-being, according to a  new study by Stanford economists released by the National Bureau of Economic Research.Without dad flexibility, mother’s bear the load alone.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“Our study underscores that the father’s presence in the household shortly after childbirth can have important consequences for the new mother’s physical and mental health,” said Petra Persson, PhD and faculty fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, in a release. The dataset was based on administrative data based on leave practices in Sweden, following a reform that increased workplace flexibility for new fathers. Starting in 2012, both parents were allowed to use their full-t ime leave benefits simultaneously for up to 30 additional days for the child’s first year. The results were marked. Researchers found that mothers with husbands that have flexibility from work are: 14% less likely to need a specialist or be admitted to a hospital for childbirth-related complications. 11% less likely to need antibiotics in the first six months after giving birth. 26% less likely to use anti-anxiety prescription drugs, showing that maternal postpartum mental well-being had increased. “The key here is that families are granted the flexibility to decide, on a day-to-day basis, when exactly to have the dad stay home,” said Persson. “If, for example, the mom gets early symptoms of mastitis while breastfeeding, the dad can take one or two days off work so that the mom can rest, which may avoid complications from the infection or the need for antibiotics.”Interestingly, the study found that the average new father used only a couple days of his allotted 30, showing that a little support goes a long way.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Keep the Interview Legal

Keep the Interview Legal Keep the Interview Legal Keep the Interview Legal Fair hiring laws were enacted to give every candidate a fair shake in the interview and selection process. Yet more than 40 years after the first of these guidelines became law, job candidates today still are asked questions that are illegal, insulting, and irrelevant to job performance. The keys to eradicating this kind of behavior are ongoing education and consistent interviewing processes and selection practices. Planning and Preparation are the First Steps The planning process prepares you to ask candidates about only the essential skills and qualifications required, and helps prevent you from asking off-the-cuff questions that could be illegal. As an HR professional, it is your job to train and guide hiring managers and other company interviewers in fair hiring practices. Many companies mandate a formal training program before any employee is permitted to interview candidates; its also a good idea to provide a written overview for all interviewers and a brief refresher curriculum from time to time. And it is the responsibility of the HR department to stay up to date on new laws and legal interpretation of existing acts. Job Relevance is the Key Factor Your interview questions should be designed to determine a candidates capability to perform the essential functions you have defined for the job. Just be sure to couch your inquiries in job-relevant language, and dont make assumptions about a candidates ability or disability. For example, lets say you are interviewing a wheelchair-bound candidate for an account manager position, and you have determined that an essential function of the job is to visit client sites. Its perfectly legal to ask how the candidate would perform this essential function: This job will require you to be out of the office meeting with clients several days per week. Can you tell me how you would get around? It is not OK to say to this same candidate, How long have you been disabled? In other areas, where a disability is not visible, again you should confine your questions to essential job functions or workplace environment issues. For example, while you cannot ask a candidate if he or she has children or has adequate child care, you can ask about ability to perform the job: This job requires you to travel overnight about 2 days per week and to attend out-of-town conferences once per month. Does this travel schedule prevent a problem for you? Legal and Illegal Inquiries Following are some of the key areas that are covered by fair hiring laws. You will see a trend in what is legal and what is illegal essentially, you cannot ask questions that will reveal information that can lead to bias in hiring, but you can ask questions that relate to job performance. Affiliations: Do not ask about clubs, social organizations, or union membership; do ask about relevant professional associations. Age: Do not ask a candidates age other than, if hired, can a candidate produce proof that he or she is 18 years of age. Alcohol or Drug Use: The only allowable question relating to current or past drug or alcohol use is, Do you currently use illegal drugs? Criminal Record: Do not ask if a candidate has been arrested; you may ask if the candidate has ever been convicted of a crime. Culture/Natural Origin: You may ask if the individual can, upon hire, provide proof of legal right to work in the United States. You may ask about language fluency if it is relevant to job performance. Disability: You may ask if candidates can perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation; and you may ask them to demonstrate how they would perform a job-related function. You may ask about prior attendance records. And you may require candidates to undergo a medical exam after an offer of employment has been made. Marital/Family Status: Questions about marital status and family issues are discouraged except as they relate to job performance, as in the child care example above. Personal: Avoid questions related to appearance, home ownership, and personal financial situation. Race/Color: No race-related questions are legal. Religion: If Saturday or Sunday is a required work day, you may ask candidates if they will have a problem working on those days. Sex: You may ask if a candidate has ever worked under another name. Be sure not to make gender-related assumptions about job capabilities. How to Deal with Information that is Volunteered Despite your careful preparation and question selection, some candidates will volunteer information that you would prefer not to know. The best way to handle this situation is not to pursue it nor to make note of it. You cant erase the information from your memory, but you can eliminate it as a discussion point and selection factor. Consistency Equals Fairness Carefully planned questions and a structured interview process that is the same for all candidates will ensure equal treatment of all who apply. Keep the focus on the job requirements and how each candidate has performed in the past. Perhaps most importantly, make fair hiring part of your companys mission and value statement, championed from the top down and an integral part of the selection process. Quick and easy hiring tips As an HR professional, you have a lot of balls up in the air at all times. Why Acting Like a 4-Year-Old Will Make You Better at Your Job

Why Acting Like a 4-Year-Old Will Make You Better at Your Job Why Acting Like a 4-Year-Old Will Make You Better at Your Job It doesn’t matter how smart you are, you will undoubtedly encounter things in your career that you are just completely lost on. You may be an incredible editor who doesn’t understand the first thing about your site’s code base. Or you may have a deft touch at making clients feel special but not get the first thing about invoicing. Heck, you’ve probably been in a situation at work where someone said something that sounded like a foreign language. And you probably nodded the entire time in agreement- then ran to your computer to Google what the hell they were talking about. Most of us fear coming across as incompetent or not smart enough, so the natural reaction in this situation is to pretend you understand something, rather than admit you are confused and lost. Problem is, every time you do that, you miss a chance to learn something from an expert. Think about it like this: Would you think it was bad if someone asked you to explain something you know a lot about? No! You’d feel flattered and great because you got to help someone. I know hardly anything, so I ask people to explain things to me all the time. And further, I always ask them to explain it to me like I’m a four-year-old. Literally. Why? Doing this accomplishes two things: One, it makes a joke about not knowing something, which can lighten the conversation. But two, and more importantly, it forces the person to simplify things down their most basic elements, so you can more easily understand what’s going on. For example, the other day someone was explaining a very technical SEO problem we were having. I probably should know this stuff, but I don’t. So I stopped him and said, “explain the problem to me like I’m a four-year old.” He looked at me like I was joking, so I insisted. The result? Rather than launching into a diatribe about meta tags, crawling, and site mapping, he simply said, “basically, your pages aren’t telling Google they exist.” Boom. That makes sense. And I could better contribute to the conversation moving forward. No, you shouldn’t use this in all situations (if you’re a PR manager and ask your boss to explain press releases to you like you’re a four-year-old, there’s a problem), but next time you’re talking about something that’s outside of your wheelhouse and don’t get, try this little trick. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to understand new concepts and actually learn. Photo of child courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to find the answer to What career is right for me

How to find the answer to 'What career is right for me' How to find the answer to 'What career is right for me' Everyone talks a lot about how much of a struggle job hunting can be.And while most people who agree that it’s a struggle are typically referring to the crazy, unpredictable maze that includes applying, researching, preparing and interviewing for whatever decent job opportunities they can get their hands on. However, a huge part of why looking for a job can be such as struggle is the fact that, sometimes you don’t even know WHAT you should be looking for! If you’ve ever felt that feeling, it’s not unheard of to think to yourself:What job is actually right for my next step in life? What career path am I actually going for?… is what I’m doing in my job search setting me up well for that? These are all some common thoughts that might go through your head specifically if: you’re just starting out in your career OR if you’ve been in many jobs that all don’t feel right for you. The good news is you’re not alone. A third of people in the U.S. who have a job view the work they do as “just a job to get them by” and pretty much nobody knows what they’re doing when they’re first starting out in the working-world (with very few exceptions)! So if you’re having a tough time/existential crisis while figuring out what you’re doing in the job world, here’s the key question to be asking yourself:What career is right for me?As a helpful guide for figuring out what career is right for you â€" here are 9 solid pieces of advice from over a dozen company leaders and career experts who’ve not only been through the struggle themselves but have guided many people through answering this exact question of ‘what career is right for me?’The advice ranges from NOT following your “passion,” finding your “sweet spot,” and giving yourself a quiz:1. Don’t follow passion alone, follow your FIT and futureI am not going to tell you to follow your passion be cause all too often, when deciding on a career path, people focus only on their passion and the ultimate impact the work will have, which are only part of the story. Satisfaction with your career is about FIT.In order to find the career that is right fit for you, you must first get in touch with your 4 P’s â€" passion, personality, preferences (for work pace, type of work, work environment, etc.), and principles (to learn more about these things, take self-assessments such as: What is Your Leadership Personality?). Next, learn more about the work you are considering (beyond simply the ultimate impact) with an emphasis on the *day-to-day* experience of *doing the job.* For example, if you are interested in becoming an engineering, the ultimate impact might be the skyscraper you designed; but, the *day-to-day* experience is slow-paced, detailed work in front of a computer screen. I often use my own experience to illustrate this point: my first a Clinical Psychologist (without first exploring the fit factors I’ve shared here) because I was passionate about psychology and wanted to help people. Possessing a Driven personality style, I thrive in fast-paced, ever-changing environments working on challenging projects that achieve results. In contrast, as a therapist, while ultimately I helped people improve their mental health (my passion), what I actually did was sit in a chair for 8 hours per day listening to other people. Rather than action-oriented and ever-changing, it was passive, slow-moving, and repetitive. For me, that was an awful fit! In order to find your perfect fit, take an intern role, volunteer, shadow or speak to others that do the work to better understand how the day-to-day experience is aligned with your passion, personality, preferences, and principles.-  Jamie Lewis Smith, Ph.D., President of Pixel Leadership Group- - - My professional advice is to do your best to find a combination of a career that taps into your passion as well as one t hat will be viable in the future.Clues to finding your passion Look at the flip side of your weaknesses. If there is something you hate to do, look at its opposite. For example, if organizational ability is not one of your strengths, you may be better suited to a less structured, perhaps artistic environment where creativity is a higher priority than organization. If working in an office makes you feel claustrophobic, perhaps you would prefer working outdoors. What subjects do you like to read about? If you are consistently drawn to a certain subject, that indicates a strong interest in that area and could provide useful information about your calling. How do you spend your leisure time? Sometimes a hobby can be turned into a career. What kind of work would you do for free? Volunteer work can uncover some strong interests. Confirm your passion Researchâ€"Your local library contains a wealth of information on careers. This is a good place to start your research. Also, conduct informational interviews. Once you have narrowed your options to a few possible careers, set up appointments with individuals in those fields to talk to them about what they do. Volunteer/Part-Time Workâ€"Volunteer or part-time work in a field can give you real life experience to base a career decision on. Career Assessmentâ€"Career assessment can give you valuable information about your interests, values, and skills as they relate to the world of work. Assessment gives you information about yourself and what types of work environments would probably suit you. Will Your Career Be Around in the Future?Career changers should research careers that they are interested in by going to the Online Occupational Handbook. You can type in the job title that you are interested in and then read an article that gives you information about the projected growth of that field. The article will tell you if the field is expected to grow, stay flat, or decline over the next 10 years. Armed with this information you can make an informed decision about your career choice.-  Cheryl E. Palmer, M.Ed., CECC, CPRW President of Call to Career2. Look for the overlap of three things that make up your career “sweet spot”When you’re wondering “what career is right for me?” it’s best to think about the intersection between what you’re good at, what organizations need done or what the world needs, and what you enjoy doing. The overlap between those three areas is your sweet spot, your career. To help populate this Venn diagram, think about your skills and in terests, rather than job titles or genres; you might be surprised to see what the things you enjoy doing add up to career-wise and it’ll expand your search, as similar skills can be applied to a wide variety of careers. Also, think about the overall work environment of someone in the different careers you’re considering. Do you thrive when you’re moving around all day or when you get uninterrupted time at a desk? Do you like a predictable schedule or variety? Do you enjoy interacting with others or having solo time to work on projects? Think about when you’ve done your best work and felt your best and use that as a guide to narrow what type of career might be best for you.Separately, research helps! If you know someone in a field you’re thinking about, ask if they’ll have a short coffee with you (your treat) to discuss the day-to-day duties of the job. Interviewing itself is another good way to figure out what career is right for you. You can learn a lot about jobs by bei ng interviewed for them, and an interview often forces you to boil down your interests and skills even if it ends up not being a good fit.-  Lucia Smith, HR Consultant at Gray Scalable- - - In choosing a career, I recommend that individuals find the “sweet spot” between the following elements: Their “superpowers” or those skills that come natural to them, require little mental or physical resources, and that they feel compelled to do Their “superpowers” which can be monetized Their core values which will lead to fulfillment when met Their mission or message I figured this out haphazardly during my own career change, but apparently, this is very similar to the Japanese principle of Ikigai. My rationale for looking at ones “superpowers” or “zone of genius” is that the process of changing careers or building a business requires a lot of time and energy. This ensures that the actual “work” will energize them, rather than drain them. It’s important to figure out what will fulfill these career seekers, rather than what has driven them in the past. Determining their core values through assessments or experimentation will help them make decisions regarding their career and avoid “shiny object syndrome.” [For example, as a professor of music, I was expected to be RE: consider a c-suite executive who wants to become a speaker. They may get calls for business consulting, a skill they have, but no longer want to pursue â€" and at the same time, struggle to secure an audience as a speaker, for although they have the knowledge, they h aven’t proven themselves in that area.Step three: Craft a plan:There are plenty of assessments that can give you insights as to what you should do for a living. Some are helpful, but none should make the decision for you. Listen to yourself and your audience. People usually know what they want to do. The hard part is constantly advancing skills in that area and then making sure people know about it.- Tim Toterhi, ICF certified executive coach and the Founder of Plotline Leadership, Author of The Introvert’s Guide to Job Hunting.5. Turn your hobby into a careerFinding the career for you require a bit of self reflection. It’s important to think critically about what it is that you like. Is there anything that excites your or passions that you have? Further, do you have hobbies that could translate to a career somehow? Thinking critically and answering some of these questions can help put you on the right path to discovering the best career for you! You can also start networking and having informational interviews to explore career possibilities as well. Find people with careers that seem interesting to you (and hopefully fit in with your responses to the above questions) and reach out to them to learn more about their role, company and career path.- Mary Pharris, Director of Business Development Partnerships at Fairygodboss.6. Give yourself an assessment to gain self awarenessJob fit is the #1 reason people excel in their careers* (Harvard Business Review study). How do you find out the type of jobs that best fit you? Many people, Millennials in particular, have been taught they can do anything they want and be successful. The truth is, in an ideal world that may be true. However, the reality is, if you are not willing to do the work required, acquire and master the necessary skills, or complete the work in a manner that helps others, you will be unhappy and unemployed (possibly, unemployable).First, use a qualified assessment (used by companies) to dete rmine your thinking style, occupational interest (does not mean you currently have the skills, but are willing to acquire them) and core behavioral traits. Do not rely on assessment products that solely provide face validity. These only show you how you want to be seen, and not how you really are.Second, with this clarity, complete the 5-steps in the book, “It’s Time to Brag! Career Edition”. Focus on the key areas that are of interest to you. This will help you sell yourself. Many readers and participants in workshops have quickly found employment after being unemployed for long periods of time. They have also used the information to increase their paychecks, receive promotions and be able to sell themselves for other opportunities.Third, rewrite your resume and network using the brag factors! They work!Fourth, become a stellar employee. Learn the ho-hum basic skills, particularly soft skills, and build on these skills. Knowing how to input data or find out information is not the same as using it appropriately to make the best decisions and learn from your mistakes [when working towards a fulfilling career]- Jeannette Seibly, an internationally recognized business advisor and management consultant, Author of “It’s Time to Brag: Five Amazing Steps to Sell Yourself” and more.- - - Self-awareness is of utmost importance in deciding which career is right. Here are top considerations to build self-awareness that allow you to home in on - he right career options: Skills, Knowledge Abilities (SKA): Knowing what you’re good at is useful to start identifying what to pursue. However, just because you’re good at something doesn’t necessarily mean that you want to do it as a job. The trick is to meld your SKA with the following: Core Values: What top 3s of Values: Logical, Kind, Exciting, Knowledgeable, Growth-Oriented, Thoughtful. Driving Needs: Whereas your core values define who you are, you have needs that run the span of mirroring to contradicting your values. Knowing your most dominant needs can help you decide how to satisfy them in reasonable ways instead of driving you to behave in dysfunctional ways. Examples of Needs: To Win, Be Challenged, Be Loved, Be Treated Justly, Maintain Order, Be Acknowledged. Personal Style/Behavioral Patterns: What are the usual patterns of your responses or relationships to other personalities, situations, information, things, and tasks? For example, what types of personalities do you usually enjoy spending time or working with, and what are usually challenging for you to deal with? Which environments allow you to be at your best and which ones lower your motivation or self-esteem, deplete your energy, or make you feel like you don’t belong? How much information and learning do you require to feel confident and how much do you need to communicate to others? - Selena Tan, a Senior Consultant at ClearRock7. Ask people who know you wellI’ve consulted clients on this in the past and there are two questions I often ask to help them determine for themselves what career is right for them.First off, I ask about their employment history. Without being aware of it, many professionals naturally etch out a career path for themselves as they work up the ranks in their given profession. For example, a Junior Designer who became a Graphic Designer who then ended up managing other designers should very obviously pursue a career in design management.Sometimes individuals have trouble seeing the forest instead of all of the individual trees. By reviewing their career history you may identify a pattern that will point the applicant in the right direction.Second, if there the job applicant is relatively inexperienced and doesn’t have a solid employment history to mine for patterns, they may require some direct advice from people who know them best.Simp ly asking a handful of your most close friends or even family, what they think you excel at, may result in at least getting pointed in the right direction. Asking people who know you best is the most surefire way to get an outside perspective on what you excel at but may not realize you excel at.In summary, by either consulting people who know you well, or by analyzing your career history for trends and patterns, most applicants should at least get a solid idea of what industry they should be working in and in what capacity.- Rudeth Shaughnessy, Sr. Editor, Copy My Resume8. Take a “non-box” approachAs an executive coach, I sometimes work with professionals who have been successful in their careers but want to pivot to a new career. Finding a career is a personal process. My advice to jump-start the process includes ‘non-box’ research, establishing a Board of Directors, testing things out, and stepping back.Develop a list of everything you enjoy doing professionally and pers onally, and have enjoyed in the past, examine themes then dive into some non-box research. Talk with people in fields that interest you â€" but also talk with people in fields outside of your areas of interest. Talking with people with different perspectives often leads us to think creatively, and can lead to ‘a-ha’ moments.Develop your own Board of Directors (BOD). This is a group of people you can discuss career issues with, and bounce ideas off. Ideally, your board should be diverse in terms of profession, age, sex, race, stage of career etc. You can include a champion/cheerleader, someone direct and tells it to you like it is, an explorer who pushes you to stretch and think differently. If you have a mentor, coach, and connector, all the better.Test out career possibilities. Take a class or talk to people in that career. Test out skills related to that career in your workplace or volunteer organizations such as professional or service organizations. For example, an attorney interested in event planning might help plan an event within their company or volunteer organization.Lastly, step back. Everything is connected â€" who you are, your life, your well-being is reflected in your professional self. Remaining resilient helps make sound decisions, think clearly, creatively and maintain the persistence needed to find a career. Step back from this decision at times and engage in healthy, enjoyable activities to keep your mind conditioned.- Lubna Somjee, Ph.D. Clinical/Health Psychologist + Executive Coach9. It all boils down to few questions and factors that apply to youWhen we’re little, we’re constantly asked the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Our answers tend to be very clear-cut careers like “an astronaut”, “a vet”, or “a firefighter”. Even as we do grow up, we tend to pursue a particular programme of study expecting to follow a linear path towards our chosen Career. Some people do have a deep-seated passion, wh at we might term a ‘calling’, and will pursue that path single-mindedly. Others â€" in fact, I would argue most of us â€" are more likely to end up in a particular career quite accidentally. We may get a first job after our studies because of a personal connection or a chance encounter, or we often follow some kind of expected path more or less on autopilot. Our careers will then tend to evolve quite organically over time as we progress to different roles, make various lateral moves, get promoted, and so on.Partly as a result of this ‘accidental’ career choice, I believe, a growing number of professionals are beginning to question whether they really are in the right job, and to look for more meaning and fulfillment. Certainly, we’ve evolved beyond the ‘job for life’ and you’re likely not just to have different jobs over the course of your professional life but also different careers. So now that you’ve woken up and decided that you want to be more proactive about p ursuing the right career path for you â€" or at least, your next career move â€" how can you go about finding what that move might be?Based on my own personal experience of quitting my job to work independently, and the career transitions I’ve witnessed among my friends and coaching clients, here are four questions I would recommend asking in order to identify the best career move for you: What’s important to you in a career? What are you good at? What do you care about? What will actually generate an income? Let’s look at each of the questions in turn. What’s important to you in a career?I think the best place to start when it comes to deciding on the right career path for you is to decide on what’s actually important to you. Another way of looking at this is: how do you define ‘success’ when it comes to a potential career? In answering this question, strip away what your parents believe, what your teachers told you, what your friends and colleagues are doing. Go back to basics and define what’s important to YOU. Essentially, you’re coming up with the criteria for your dream job here. You’ll want to consider things like: location, schedule, the type of work, how much money you want to earn, the kind of people you’re working with, the level of autonomy, how much learning you want to have on the job…For example, is it important to be able to have a flexible work arrangement so that you can spend time with your young family? Do you want to be able to work independently, or express your creativity freely? Is it a dream of yours to travel extensively, either with work or between jobs? As you list these criteria, think carefully about which of these are non-negotiable, and which are ‘nice to have’ but not essential. What are you good at?Now it’s all very well to say that success for me is becoming a prima ballerina in the Bolshoi Ballet, but if I haven’t danced since I was 12 years old and I can’t even touch my toes, that’s probably not going to be a viable career choice for me at this stage of my life. So once you’ve defined the criteria for your ideal job, you’ll also need to ask: “What am I good at?”Think beyond the obvious skills that are specific to your current role and consider broader skills that can be transferred to different situations. You can include skills you’ve developed in previous jobs, maybe even in your hobbies and activities in your spare time. For example, you may have experience in managing complex projects un der tight deadlines or in managing social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. It’s not just a question of hard skills, either; you should also consider your personal strengths and talents. I have a friend, for example, who is a very creative and innovative problem solver, always finding a solution that’s ingenious and unexpected. With such a profile, she’s probably not well suited to a large traditional company where it’s important to play by the rules and follow standard processes; instead, she’ll likely thrive in a more flexible environment such as in a startup where agility and resourcefulness are skills that are much sought after. What do you care about? This question, I believe, is one that gets to the very heart of why many of us feel unfulfilled in our jobs. We may be good at what we’re doing, and it may tick a lot of our boxes in terms of working arrangements and benefits, but if we fundamentally don’t care about our work then we’re going to feel unsatisfi ed. We’re also not going to be giving our best to the company. My own choice to leave my full-time job three years ago was related to this question, as I asked myself: “Do I really care about selling ‘smelly water’ (as someone, I forget who, once called the luxury perfume that I was selling)?” I came from a background of studying African development and wanting to work in an international organization, so my actual employment in consumer goods marketing was always at odds with my initial career goals. This is an area that I’m still working on, in fact, reconciling my skills and experience from a particular sector with the values I have and a bigger ‘mission’ or purpose. So what do you care about? This can be what we might class as a classic ‘good cause’ â€" for example, taking care of the environment, protecting animal rights, providing support for the homeless â€" but it doesn’t have to be. You might be passionate about making life easier for families with bette r products in the home, bringing innovation to a traditional industry, building a community of like-minded people; or you might care about promoting music and art, or cultivating beauty and fashion. The point is that this is a very personal choice, and you should make it without any sense of guilt, or comparing to what other people are doing. What will actually generate an income?Ah, money. I’ve left this point for last intentionally. Having a secure and stable income is one of the main reasons cited why we should stay in our jobs, even if we’re unhappy; and it’s one of the main criteria for most of us when making career decisions. “It’s all very well to follow your passion,” they’ll say, “but how will you pay your bills?”Many of my clients struggle with what they *really* want to do, and what they think will make them the most money. Often, money is not even an important value for them; they’ve explicitly said that they are not desperate for an immediate income w hen starting their business, or that they don’t need to earn a huge salary. And yet they will often lean towards making a commercial decision as to the choice that will generate the biggest income rather than the one that best fits their own values and preferences.I think there’s an underlying belief here that doing what you love will never pay. As I already wrote last week, however, couldn’t it also be argued that doing what you love will mean that you work harder, and produce better outputs, than if you’re unhappy and unmotivated at work?Whatever you believe in this regard, it’s true that money is a consideration, and it’s important that you do think about how you will earn your income. If you’re looking for a new job, what are the types of companies who will value people with your skills, strengths, and experience? Which industries might you be best suited for, which types of roles? If you’re thinking of working freelance, as a consultant, or starting a business: Who will be the clients that buy your services? Whose problem are you solving? Is your idea actually a viable business proposition? Now it may not be as simple as ticking off criteria 1, 2, 3 and 4 and, voil, that’s your dream job; but in my opinion, these questions do cover the most important considerations when it comes to finding a meaningful career. As you answer the questions, and decide between the different options, try not to be too black and white. There are far more constellations of jobs than we might at first imagine, with new hybrid and portfolio careers opening up the possibilities to create our own ideal working arrangements. If you’re missing information about an unfamiliar industry or a different kind of job function, who can you talk to in order to find out more? If you find gaps in your skills, what can you do to fill those gaps?- Anna Lundberg, Speaker Writer and Success Coach- - - For job seekers, it can be hard to figure out if a career path is the right one. Maybe you have tried several jobs already and not found one that ‘clicked.’ If that is the case, take a look at a few key factors to determine what career is right for you.InteractionsThe amount of contact you have with coworkers, customers, and the public at large can be a big factor in deciding if a career is a good fit for you. If you are a ‘people person,’ then sitting in a cubicle all day managing data is not going to be satisfying long-term. On the other hand, if you prefer to concentrate on details and not deal with many people, make sure you are not taking on a customer service role â€" you will burn out in a few months.Growth potentialWhen looking at a career, focus on more than just the short-term. Yes, you need a job now, but make sure you are looking for a position that has advancement potential. Look at job descriptions for your dream job â€" the one you hope to have someday and retire from. What kind of qualifications and experience does it require? Will t he jobs you are looking at, fulfill those requirements?ResearchOne of the most effective ways to tell if a career is right for you is to talk with people who are in that career. It is easier than ever to find people willing to give you advice and input about their careers â€" find influencers on LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, or through old-fashioned face-to-face networking. Ask questions and see if that career path matches up with the things you value and want from your professional life.- Jessie West, M.Ed.
